The Triumphant Return Of Matisyahu
Matisyahu may have taken a sabbatical, and his new album may be a little unorthodox, but Matis is back with a brand new album appropriataly entitled LIGHT, featuring the single One Day. Five years ago you may have laughed at an American Hasidic Jewish reggae musician. He’s come a long way since album Live at Stubb’s and his cover of Message In A Bottle. Both great milestones in his career, but LIGHT might be the crowning glory thus far in his career.
Whenyou listen to LIGHT for the first time you might be surpised and misled by the opening track Smash Lies. It has an extremly heavy hip-hop undertone with a slight hint of auto-tune, but don’t let it discourage you. Matisyahu is just setting you up for the rest of your musical journey.
One Day is at the top of my favorites list and I can already see it being the anthem of world issues and anti-war messages for the rest of the year. Verses like “One day we’ll all be free and proud to be under the same sun singing songs of freedom.” will continue to run through your head long after you hit stop. From Smash Lies to Silence, Matisyahu takes us on another powerful journey as he combines his religious experiences and intense lyrics with the reggae, rap and rock style we’ve grown to love. From top to bottom you can expect powerful messages spread through the entire album.
Album Review – 89/100
